Scholarships & Awards Via Application (Application Required)
Commending and recognizing students who are able to excel academically, and in their respective careers and communities, has become a critical component of the AU Awards Program. These are commonly referred to as Leadership Scholarships, and you must apply for most of them. This process may vary between awards. Instructions for applying are outlined in the descriptions for each award. There is no restriction on the number of awards for which you may apply.

Alberta Blue Cross 50th Anniversary Bursary

Description of Award
The Alberta Blue Cross 50th Anniversary Bursary is awarded annually to two current AU undergraduate nursing degree program students who have achieved the highest grade average on two 3 credit nursing courses taken through Athabasca University. The grade average on the two AU nursing courses must be 80 percent or better. Eligible students must be residents of Alberta and demonstrate financial need. Students can receive these scholarships once only.
Conditions of Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for these scholarships:
• Be current AU undergraduate nursing degree program students
• Have an 80% grade average on two AU 3 credit nursing courses
• Be Alberta resident
• Have demonstrated financial need
• Submit the completed application, and any supporting documents, to the Student Awards Administrative Assistant, Office of the Registrar at AU.

Alberta Historical Resources Foundation Aboriginal First Year Graduate Studies Tuition Scholarship

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation (AHRF) Aboriginal First Year Graduate Studies Tuition Scholarship is intended to remove barriers and equip emerging leaders in the heritage community with the critical management skills and abilities that will enable them to contribute to the preservation of heritage resources. Preference will be given to Athabasca University (AU) students that reside in the province of Alberta. Students who qualified for admission into the AU Heritage Resources Management (HRM) Graduate Diploma Program through the Alberta Intern Program are not eligible for this award.

National Conference Travel Award

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation (AHRF) Travel Awards are available to current Athabasca University (AU) students enrolled in one of the AU Heritage Resources Management Programs who wish to attend a national conference such as the CMA National Conference or the Heritage Canada Conference. Applicants must be in good academic standing and be able to explain why attendance at the conference will be beneficial to their career and educational advancement. Students are eligible to receive the national conference once only. This award can be applied to conference registration fees and travel costs only.

Alberta Women's Science Network Undergraduate Scholarship in Science and Computing Science

Awarded annually to female students enrolled in a undergraduate degree program with either the Centre for Science or School of Computing and Information Systems who have completed a minimum of nine Athabasca University 300 level (or higher) credits in the past 12 months.
Applicants must be in their second, third, or fourth year of a program in science or computing science at Athabasca University, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or greater. Applicants must be registered in at least one Athabasca University course at the time of application. A demonstrated knowledge of women in science and technology in Canada and a personal commitment towards pursuing work in a field of science or technology is required.
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants with permanent residence in Canada.
Apply in writing by submitting:
- A completed application form
- An essay of no more than 500 words that describes the contributions of one Canadian woman who has significantly impacted the direction of science or technology in Canada or the world. Citations referencing the source of this information must be included in the essay and do not comprise the 500 word limit. Students will be requested to sign and date a disclaimer attesting to the original contributions made by the student for this essay.

AU Academic Leadership Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to current Athabasca University (AU) undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program. Students earning credit towards an AU Bachelor degree designation who have achieved a cumulative AU grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 or higher and who have completed at least 15 AU credits are eligible to apply.
Preference will be given to applicants who have proven leadership skills and/or have contributed to their local community via volunteerism and active participation in extracurricular cultural and/or recreational activities. Students are eligible to receive this award once within any five-year period.

Candidates must be participating in undergraduate or graduate coursework at Athabasca University. Preference will be given to students in an AU degree, diploma, or certificate program who have made noteworthy progress toward graduation and who have an identified financial need for funding assistance.

These awards are intended to facilitate the research conducted by AU graduate program students to assist in partially covering the costs incurred while completing a thesis/dissertation or major project. Examples of anticipated expenses that a student may incur include purchasing licenses for statistical software such as SPSS, NVIVO, mileage to conduct interviews for the research, or obtaining copyright permission to use a particular research tool/instrument.

AU Access to Students With Disabilities Education Bursary

Applicants must have expressed significant determination to commence studies at AU but be in such desperate financial privation, that investing in personal education is monetarily impossible, as confirmed by the ASD Office.

Preference will be given to students who are not eligible for alternative funding sources via the 'Canadian Studies Grant for Students with Disabilities' or 'Employability Assistance for Persons with Disabilities'.
Conditions of Eligibility
An applicant must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this award:
• Be a current Athabasca University undergraduate or graduate student.
• Have an identified learning, physical, or mental disability, as defined in the description of the bursaries above.
• Student must be registered with the AU – Access for Students with Disabilities Office.
• Availability of alternative funding sources
• Demonstration of financial need
• Verified need for technology and/or support services
• Appropriateness of the technology and/or support services as determined by the Assistive Technologist, and/or ASD Office.
• A vendor quotation that supports the requests for ASD technology or support service expenditures
• Submission of the fully completed application, and required enclosures, to the Student Awards Administrative Assistant within the Office of the Registrar at AU, by the deadline

This award is for a current AU graduate student taking their first graduate program who is 50 years of age or older. Applicants must have begun their AU graduate program in the two years prior to the application deadline and have successfully completed a minimum of 9 AU credits in that time. The candidate must have an overall AU program GPA of 3.2 to be eligible.

This award is for an undergraduate AU program student that is 40 to 60 years of age beginning university education for the first time. Applicants must be current students beginning their first year of AU post secondary study after April 1st of the previous year and who has successfully completed a minimum of 6 AU credits. The candidate must have an overall AU cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be eligible.

AU Career Advancement Award - Graduate

AU Doctoral Level Student Bursaries

The AU Doctoral Level Student Bursaries are intended to assist students continue with their education without interruption to their studies due to financial need or exceptional life circumstances.
Current AU doctoral level program students in financial need and/or those AU students faced with exceptional life circumstances are invited to apply. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 AU credits at the doctoral level and have a cumulative AU program GPA of 3.0. Additional circumstances such as disabilities, single parent/caregiver status, and so forth may be taken into consideration.
Applications are accepted year round until all the bursaries are disbursed. No student can receive more than two of these bursaries in a five year period.

These awards are for current Athabasca University students who are the first in their family (grandparents, parents, nor siblings have earned a post secondary credential, i.e. university, college or technical diploma, certificate or degree) to attend university. Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program with a minimum of 9 AU program credits (not completed by challenge credit) and a minimum cumulative AU GPA of 3.0 are invited to apply.

Awarded to an Athabasca University (AU) graduate level program student. Applicants that have received tuition subsidies or reimbursements from their employer(s) are not eligible for this scholarship. Applicants must have a cumulative AU graduate GPA of 3.60 or greater.
Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated the ability to balance full time employment, family commitments, and community roles while taking a significant course load (9 AU credits per year, or more) and establishing an excellent record of academic achievement. Students are eligible to receive this award once within any five-year period.
Students of doctoral programs are not eligible.

The AU Masters Level Refugee award is for a program student with the highest final mark average on his or her best 15 AU program credits (not completed by challenge credit) who has arrived in Canada as a refugee within the last fifteen years.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to a current AU undergraduate student who has successfully completed the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process.
Students must be enrolled in an AU degree program, have a cumulative AU GPA of 3.60 or higher at an undergraduate level, be within 30 credits of completing their undergraduate degree program and have not received this award previously.
Applicants will be asked to write a short essay (500 words) explaining the contribution of the PLAR process to their success as learners.

AU Red Crow Community College Student Awards

The Athabasca University (AU) – Red Crow College Student Awards are intended to recognize the achievement of Red Crow College students who wish to pursue studies at Athabasca University (AU), yet face financial barriers that inhibit their ability to do so. Students at other First Nation Colleges are eligible to apply, although preference will be given to students from Red Crow College. Students may reapply and receive this award more than once.
An applicant must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this award:
• Be a current AU student. (degree program, certificate or unclassified).
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Demonstrate their desire to achieve their educational goals.
• Submit the completed application, and any supporting documents, to the Student Awards Administrative Assistant, Office of the Registrar at AU.
• GPA of 2.0 or higher at Red Crow College (or other First Nation College with in Alberta)

The AU Undergraduate Refugee award is for a program student with the highest final mark average on his or her best 15 AU program credits (not completed by challenge credit) who has arrived in Canada as a refugee within the last ten years.

parent/caregiver status, and so forth may be taken into consideration.
Applications are accepted year round until all the bursaries are disbursed. No student can receive more than two of these bursaries in a five year period.

The essay must be an original work that is properly documented and formatted. They are awarded to current AU undergraduate students who have successfully completed (passed) a 3 credit science course, in which travel to complete lab work occurred between October 16, of the previous year and October 15, of the current year. Successful completion of the science course is required.
Preference will be given to those students that have never received an undergraduate lab travel award. Students traveling for LABB 207 who have successfully completed BIOL 204 and/or BIOL 205 are eligible to apply for this award.

• Have completed MDDE701 (Advanced Research Methods) and is currently enrolled in MDDE702 (Research Proposal Writing)
• Be in good academic standing
• Have not received this award
• Submit a fully completed application, and any required enclosures, to the Student Awards Unit at Athabasca University.
