Scholarships & Awards Via Application (Application Required)

Commending and recognizing students who are able to excel academically, and in their respective careers and communities, has become a critical component of the AU Awards Program. These are commonly referred to as Leadership Scholarships, and you must apply for most of them. This process may vary between awards. Instructions for applying are outlined in the descriptions for each award. There is no restriction on the number of awards for which you may apply.

    The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation (AHRF) Aboriginal First Year Graduate Studies Tuition Scholarship is intended to remove barriers and equip emerging leaders in the heritage community with the critical management skills and abilities that will enable them to contribute to the preservation of heritage resources. Preference will be given to Athabasca University (AU) students that reside in the province of Alberta. Students who qualified for admission into the AU Heritage Resources Management (HRM) Graduate Diploma Program through the Alberta Intern Program are not eligible for this award.

    Number Awarded: Varies - two awards per undergraduate degree designation
    Annual Application Deadline: October 15

    These scholarships are awarded to current Athabasca University (AU) undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program. Students earning credit towards an AU Bachelor degree designation who have achieved a cumulative AU grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 or higher and who have completed at least 15 AU credits are eligible to apply.

    Preference will be given to applicants who have proven leadership skills and/or have contributed to their local community via volunteerism and active participation in extracurricular cultural and/or recreational activities. Students are eligible to receive this award once within any five-year period.

    The AU First in Family to Attend University Award is one of the awards in the AU Student Stand Out Awards Portfolio and the premise is to recognize that all AU students Stand Out! The AU Student Stand Out Awards are a portfolio of awards aimed at recognizing the students’ drive to reach desired educational goals, despite the challenges along the way.

    These awards are for current Athabasca University students who are the first in their family (grandparents, parents, nor siblings have earned a post secondary credential, i.e. university, college or technical diploma, certificate or degree) to attend university. Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program with a minimum of 9 AU program credits (not completed by challenge credit) and a minimum cumulative AU GPA of 3.0 are invited to apply.

    Value: Up to $2000 (Tuition costs associated with three, 3 credit Athabasca University courses)
    Number Awarded: Three per competition, two competitions per year

    The Athabasca University (AU) – First Nation Colleges Student Awards are intended to recognize the achievement of Alberta First Nation College students who wish to pursue studies at Athabasca University (AU), yet face financial barriers that inhibit their ability to do so. Students attending or from First Nation Colleges in Alberta are eligible to apply. Preference may be given to students from Red Crow College. Students may reapply and receive this award more than once.

    An applicant must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this award:
    • Be a current AU student. (degree program, certificate or unclassified).
    • Demonstrate financial need.
    • Demonstrate their desire to achieve their educational goals.
    • Submit the completed application and any supporting documents to the Student Awards Unit, Office of the Registrar at AU.
    • GPA of 2.0 or higher at Red Crow College (or other First Nation College with in Alberta)
    • GPA of 2.0 or higher at AU if reapplying for this award.

    Value: $1500 towards course enrolment
    Number Awarded: 20 (10 bursaries offered twice a year)
    Annual Application Deadline: September 15
    April 15

    The AU Graduate Level Student Bursaries are intended to assist students with their education without interruption to their studies due to financial need or exceptional life circumstances.

    Current AU graduate level program students (Masters, Post-Masters, and Post-Baccalaureate) in financial need and/or those AU students faced with exceptional life circumstances are invited to apply. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 9 AU credits at the graduate level and have an AU program GPA of 3.0. Additional circumstances such as disabilities, single parent/caregiver status, and so forth may be taken into consideration.

    Applications are accepted year round until all the bursaries are disbursed. No student can receive more than two of these bursaries in a five year period.

    The AU Undergraduate Bursaries are intended to assist AU program students continue with their education without interruption to their studies due to financial need or exceptional life circumstances.

    Current AU students in financial need and/or those AU students faced with exceptional life circumstances are invited to apply. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 AU credits at the undergraduate level. Additional circumstances such as disabilities, single

    This annual award recognizes outstanding written work by an undergraduate student on topics on women, gender and feminism.

    To be eligible, you must be an Athabasca University undergraduate student and your essay must meet the selection criteria.

    Your essay, cover sheet and authorization form must be submitted electronically to the Students Awards Unit via an AU tutor or instructor by April 15th.

    The Cathy Bray Essay award recognizes the contributions of Dr. Cathy Bray to the development of the MAIS program, MAIS students and Athabasca University.

    This annual essay award recognizes the outstanding written work done by an AU Master of Arts – Integrated Studies (MAIS) program student. In keeping with Dr. Bray’s research and teaching foci.

    Eligibility
    • Open to AU MAIS program students
    Criteria
    • Any MAIS course essay that uses a gender analysis, feminist theory or feminist research methods to research and analyze a topic is eligible
    • Essays from MAIS701 or MAIS702 project courses are not eligible
    • Consideration will be given to students who apply gender and feminist analyses in original ways to a wide variety of topics in their MAIS courses

    Awarded annually to a staff member, current student, graduand, or past graduate of Edwin Parr Composite High School wanting to take, or who is currently taking, an AU course or courses. Individual must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at AU. Preference will be given to those contributing to the betterment of their community through volunteerism or active participation. Preference will also be given to those applicants that do not have access to the AU Staff Tuition Allowance (policy number 100 011).

    These bursaries are intended to help offset travel costs incurred by students participating in travel required in Faculty of Health Disciplines’ programs. Examples of required travel include beginning orientation and/or clinical placement. These funds are awarded to current AU students who reside in North or
    Central Alberta, who have demonstrated financial need and commitment to the health profession and who are enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Health Disciplines in which travel is required.

    Students can receive this award only once during their program.

    Conditions of Eligibility:

    Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for this bursary

    • Be a current student (undergraduate or graduate) enrolled in any program within the Faculty of Health Disciplines, graduate or undergraduate
    • Demonstrate financial need
    • Must reside in Northern or Central Alberta
    • Provide an explanation of their commitment to the health profession
    • Submit the fully completed application, and any required enclosures, to the Student Awards Unit at Athabasca University.

    Awarded to current AU undergraduate program or collaboration program students in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of study who are in good academic standing, who have demonstrated a financial need, and who possess identified technological obstacles to continuing academic study at Athabasca University.

    Applicants must be of Indigenous ancestry as defined by their nation of origin. Proof of ancestry is required. Indigenous community acceptance and participation should be addressed in the application.

    Applicants must be a resident of Alberta and of Aboriginal ancestry; Status/Non-Status Indian, Inuit or Métis.
    Preference will be given to applicants who have not been a previous recipient of the award.

    The Walker Wood Foundation Undergraduate First in Family Bursaries are intended to offer financial support and recognition to Athabasca University undergraduate program students who are the first in their family to attend a post-secondary educational institution.

    These bursaries are for current Athabasca University students who are the first in their family (grandparents, parents, nor siblings have earned a post secondary credential, i.e. university, college or technical diploma, certificate or degree) to attend university. Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and have successfully completed at least one, 3 credit AU course, (not completed by challenge credit). Applicants must a Canadian citizen and demonstrate financial need.
