Cashing Your Student Loan

Provinces that issue a Master Student Financial Aid Agreement (MSFAA)

  • The Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) replaces previous federal and provincial loan agreements. Since it's a multi-year agreement, it's more efficient and easier to use. For instance, you won't have to sign a new agreement the next time you apply for student financial assistance (some exceptions apply, for example, if you take a two-year break in study).
  • Your responsibilities and the terms and conditions of accepting and repaying your student loans are outlined in your MSFAA. When you sign your MSFAA, you are signing two contracts: one between yourself and the Government of Canada, and one between yourself and your provincial government.
  • The MSFAA only applies to full-time student loan applicants.
  • It is important that you read the terms and conditions to learn what your responsibilities are from application to repayment before signing.
  • You must sign and return your MSFAA as instructed in order to receive your student loan disbursement.

The MSFAA must be submitted at a Canada Post outlet or direct to the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) by the student as soon as possible to ensure your loan is processed in time to start your courses.

What you will need when submitting the MSFAA

  • A document proving that the Social Insurance Number (SIN) indicated on your loan or grant authorization document is your own (i.e. SIN card, Canada Revenue Agency assessment).
  • Valid photo identification issued in Canada by the federal, provincial or territorial, government (i.e. valid driver's licence).
  • Banking information (void cheque or account information).

Provinces that issue paper Student Loan Certificates

  • If you are in receipt of a paper Student Loan Certificate of Eligibility, you will need to send it to the Student Financial Aid unit in the Office of the Registrar to be confirmed and signed by an AU representative. Contact sfa@athabascau.ca for further instructions.

What you will need when negotiating your loan certificate

  • A document proving that the Social Insurance Number (SIN) indicated on your loan or grant authorization document is your own (i.e. SIN card, Canada Revenue Agency assessment).
  • Valid photo identification issued in Canada by the federal, provincial or territorial, government (i.e. valid driver's licence).
  • Banking information (void cheque or account information).

Certificates must be negotiated within 30 days of being confirmed or signed by the school.

Confirmation of Attendance and Tuition Remittance

  • AU is authorized to request that tuition be remitted directly to the University, if you have not previously paid your tuition fees for your period of study.
  • Confirmation of attendance will be completed by your Financial Aid Advisor as per provincial processes.
